For example, in our office you would receive an orthopedic, neurological and structural examination and more than likely a series of x-rays. Following your examination, your chiropractor may recommend everything from applying ice for 48 hours to sore areas to a series of chiropractic adjustments, which are a very appropriate, and typical, treatment immediately following a car accident. A number of our accident patients, in the days just following an accident, have asked me if it’s okay for them to get a massage.
Our recommendation is to not get a massage in the first week following an auto accident, regardless of whether you were on the receiving or giving end of the event.
We recommend that our patients don’t get a massage in the days just following a car accident because it interrupts that important mechanism, and also puts you at risk for further damaging tissue and muscle that was harmed in the accident. Depending on a patient’s rate of recovery, We will recommend massage a week or two following the accident; it is a beneficial addition to most treatment plans.
